Saxophone Quartet

Angels We Have Heard On High/ Ding Dong Merrily On High for Sax Quartet - This arrangement combines these two carols by alternating phrases from each and by having sections of the carols occur simultaneously. There are also free sections of imitative counterpoint interspersed. All this occurs over a syncopated ostinato rhythm that has the eight eighth notes of the 4/4 measure grouped as 3,3,2 resulting in a very festive arrangement for concert or church prelude use. Elements for Saxophone Quartet - (SATB or AATB) "Elements" and is designed to musically portray the essential nature of the Classical Greek elements, fire, water, air and earth and their astrological implications. The first movement is Fire whose essential nature is strong and controlling. The music contains a lot of forceful sections, primarily in a homophonic style. The water element’s chief characteristic is sensitivity, therefore it is in a slow tempo and is lyrical and harmonically rich. The chief characteristic of the air element it is changeable, therefore this movement is filled with contrasts of texture, dynamics, articulation, meter, tonality, and orchestration. This last movement represents the Earth element whose main characteristic is stability. To represent stability musically, a lot of ostinatos were used. This work was commissioned by the h2 quartet. Shenanigans for Saxophone Quartet - "Shananigans" is a one-movement playful composition in three contrasting sections. The first section uses pyramids of over an obstinate as its first idea. The second idea that contains many running passages is treated contrapuntally. The second section is at a slower tempo in three four time and contains chromatic lines and jeering motifs. The final Allegro is staccato and playful that builds to a climax using contrary motion. Advanced

Hope Collage for Saxophone Octet - Hope Collage was commissioned in honor of Hope College's 14th President, Matthew Scogin. President Scogin was inaugurated in 2019 and exemplifies the qualities of hope represented in this piece. The first movement "Castles In The Sky" is in 6/8 meter with some of the syncopated rhythmic figures that pit 3/4 against the 6/8. The slow second movement "A Light at the End of the Tunnel" has the tenor and baritone saxophones representing the darkness of the tunnel using minor and slightly dissonant harmony. The light at the end of the tunnel is represented by the alto and soprano saxophones. The third movement "Knock On Wood" has a Scherzo quality and is at an allegro tempo. The last movement "Promised Land" is in two parts. The first is meditative and prayer-like in a moderate tempo. The Allegro begins with a sixteenth note motif that plays an accompaniment role in many places throughout the last section to the slower moving declarative lines. Advanced
